Technically, you don't need to remove an older version of Office on Macs. The new version won't overwrite any old files or anything. The applications use their own com files and whatnot, so they don't even share folders. The only thing they'll share is the application location, if you put it in the default location for applications when installed.

If its not absolutely necessary, you can just remove any shortcuts to the old copy of 2011 and put a new shortcut on the dock for 2016.
If you need to uninstall 2011, all that you really need to do is drag application(s) from the Applications folder to the recycle bin and empty it.

Nov 04, 2019 Note: this problem only seems to occur with older versions of the macOS, from El Capitan (10.11) on back. It could be that the version of Office 365 that runs on 10.11 and 10.10 has this issue and that the “regular” version does not. Regardless, now you know the fix!
